Southeastern Skills Pledge

Research shows that across the UK workforce around one employee in every five has problems with basic literacy and numeracy. That's bad news for employees as it means they lack the skills to secure promotion or benefit from training. It's bad news for employers because it means their staff are not able to do their best for the business. And above all is bad news for passengers as the lack of basic skills means employees may not be delivering the service they expect.

That's why, in partnership with the RMT, ASLEF and the TSSA, Southeastern has taken a major step towards improving literacy and numeracy and raising skill and qualification levels among our 3,900 strong workforce.

The Skills Pledge is an opportunity for businesses or organisations to show publicly the importance they place on investing in the skills of their people. It is a commitment to support all our employees to develop their basic skills, including literacy and numeracy, and work towards relevant, valuable qualifications to at least Level 2 (equivalent to five good GCSEs). The purpose is to ensure that all employees are skilled, competent and able to make a full contribution to the success of our company.

Last Friday 5 December 2008, Andy Bindon, HR director officially launched Southeastern's commitment to the Skills Pledge at The Red Star Learning Centre in Chatham on Friday morning. He paid tribute to the commitment and hard work the trades unions have put into both employee development and the Skills Pledge.

Netting new skills

Learning a new skill

Find out why learning new skills can help safeguard your career

More than half of workers were worried about their job prospects because of the economic downturn, according to new research today.

A survey of 2,000 adults by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) showed that one in two would now try to improve their career prospects through training.

Most of those polled admitted there was room for improvement in their skill levels, including IT, literacy and problem solving.

LSC chairman Chris Banks said: "It's true that learning new skills and retraining can lead to a refreshing career change, but it's also important to realise that employees with transferable skills are often seen as the biggest assets to employers.

"A small investment in learning new skills will make you better prepared to tackle any eventuality, particularly in a tough economy."

TSSA RULR London Meeting

Karl, our lead TSSA rep, attended a meeting of London RULR reps today, and was very disappointed at the low attendance of local reps.

I must apologise myself too, as I was due to go until a family member was admitted into hospital, but it's important that we all try to attend these meetings or conferences whenever possible. It's a great chance to network, share ideas, and find out what's going on!

It's encouraging to see some more posts being made on the blog recently, and don't forget our Rail-Learning website too!

See you all soon,
Ken

Forum at Chatham

Thank you to all the Learner Reps that turned up on Friday and informed the Lead Learner Reps what had been going on in their area.

Please could those who couldn't attend let the Lead Learner reps know what has been going on, and who you have spoken to. These are outcomes, and are very important so that we can set up and run courses to keep the Red Star Centre open.

If you cannot attend meetings please let the Lead Reps know, we can then send you any information from these meetings. Your contributions are welcome, so please keep them coming in.

Today's Forum

The day's meeting was a wake up call to all Learning Reps to make their presence felt in the work-place and proposals for the 2009 Learners Week.It was also highlighted that one of the functions of being a Learning Rep is to encourage the personal Development of fellow workers and their family for it is an acepted fact that- FORMAL EDUCATION WILL MAKE YOU A LIVING,SELF EDUCATION WILL MAKE YOU A FORTUNE
JIM RHOM.
This is important for our future retirement.
There are a lot of courses being offered online by UnionLearn.
Have a nice Day .
Ade.

Mike's rant

I was at the learning reps forum today with some of the more proactive reps. All good people who want to get involved and help their fellow members and workers access any aspects of learning that may appeal to them. So, what is the problem? Well, there is no problem with them, but I do have a problem with those who have undertaken the role of learning rep and then do nothing! And I mean nothing at all
Being a rep is not just about you, it's about the reps and learners who will follow you. Establishing acceptance of the role in the workplace is very important, so adding to negative perceptions by doing sweet F.A. is not helpful! So, if you do nothing else, find a colleague who would do a more pro-active job and get them to do it!
If you have an issue with this, please feel free to complain to your branch (RMT) or your lead learning reps or at your union head office. At least we would know that you read this!

Forum 4

On the 3rd of October at the latest forum it was discussed that we should try and get more ULR'S to help with Adult Learners Week in 2009 on the 9th-15th of May.

Forum

When the forum met today it was decided to recruit more Ulrs to make more impact within the workplace.

ICT courses starting September

There will be some new opportunities in September for staff wishing to reserve a place on the Basic Computer Skills courses at the Red Star Learning Centre.

These courses are ideal for staff who may be unfamiliar with computers, or those who wish to 'brush up' existing PC skills or even learn how to do new things with the PC - such as photo editing or designing a web page.

The courses are FREE and run for 10 weeks, with sessions in the morning and afternoon so that shift work need not be a barrier.

You can reserve a place by contacting Ivor Riddell

There is also the opportunity for online courses which can be completed both at the learning centre and also at home.

Please speak with Ivor Riddell or Kendal May for further details.

We look forward to seeing you!

Union Learning Conference
Wednesday 18th June 2008

Well what can I say the conference this year was one of the best myself Ivor Riddell and Mike Sergeant attended from the Red Star Learning centre but was we were disappointed by the lack of southeastern learning reps in attendance in fact besides the two Johns from Slade Green there was no one else out of approx 40 reps no one attended, this will an agenda item at the forum “The lack of Learning Reps activity”.

Anyway back to the matter in hand in attendance at the conference were:
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the idea of the union learning came from Tony Benn’s son Hilary Benn whilst working for David Blunket when he was Education Sec and Home Sec who then championed it through the house of parliament.

Brenden Barber General Sec of the TUC

“ Employers that negotiate and consult with train unions in the work place are on record show that there was higher productivity than work places without the consultation process and it’s a win win situation”

John Denham Sec of State for Department of Innovation and Universities and Skills DIUS

“ Employers can get finical support and advise to train staff and from autumn we will be providing the opportunity of people to develop there skills even further up to the age of 25 years of age”
(Seen Web site below for further information)

http://www.dius.gov.uk/speeches/denham_unionlearn_180608.html

While all the speech were going on the conference was being broadcasted via the web to universities and collages all over the country Sheffield and Manchester to name but a few and people were e mailing questions for the speakers to answer also various trade unions were also on line asking questions to the various speakers.
It was also brought up about the larger learning centre sharing their facilities with the smaller work places and this was generally already accepted by RMT, TSSA and ASLEF already, so we are at the for-front of union education already.

We had two additional speakers:

Val McDermid the well know writer who when she was working in the print industry before taking up writing was an active trade unionist who delight the conference with here speech and provided the delegates with a free copy of her book “Union Jack” a murder mystery of a union delegate who was murdered while at a conference ( Strange book to pass out at a conference) She is also the author of “The wire in the Blood” which was televised on ITV with Robson Green as Tony Hill which was such a big success.

Which leaves us with our last speaker which was “Lenny Henry” who in 19080 took his O levels, BA in English Literature in 2000 and who is know studying for his MA all through Open university. The comedian had the conference in stitches with his speech and I wish a lot more delegates were there from South-eastern to listen to this man and the passion he has for the trade union movement and further education.

Well that’s nearly every thing except please attend at the Red Star Learning Centre at Chatham as this is your centre.

Well see you soon

Learning Week Roadshow at Chatham

Adult Learners Week finished today with a Learning Fair at the Red Star Centre in Chatham, where the theme was "Learning? It's a piece of cake". Everyone who undertook a Skills for Life assessment or completed a Learning Needs Questionnaire were given a piece of gateau or cream cake to enjoy with their drink whilst browsing the other activities that were taking place.

We had video screens showing clips from our roadshows that had taken place earlier in the week, and a fantastic BBC RaW corner offering learners the chance to take 'Quick Read' books away with them. Our BSL signing expert was on hand to explain about learning sign language, we also demonstrated digital photography and were also visited by representatives from all three Rail Unions.

Everyone involved in Learning Week had a fantastic time and really enjoyed meeting all of the staff. We're looking forward to starting some new courses very soon, including Basic Computer Skills starting in just over 3 weeks.

See you there!

Learning Week Roadshow at Hastings

Today was down by the beach again for the Red Star team (and Monkey) as we visited the staff at sunny Hastings! We met with all of the staff on duty, including cleaning and catering staff, and handed out 'goodies' and Learning Needs Questionnaires.

Everyone had a great time, and we had a display set up in the Training Rooms with DVD's promoting Learning at Work. The staff are looking forward to a British Sign Language course being held at Hastings later in the year.

A big thank you to Clare today for helping us meet with the staff, and for showing us around the station. We were made very welcome, and look forward to building up a good relationship with the staff who work there.

Learning Week Roadshow at Ramsgate

Today we took the Learning Week Roadshow to Ramsgate, where Dave Bull had organised Geneology Taster sessions in the staff area and was busy promoting Adult Learners Week with lots of posters, freebies and information for potential learners.

Mike and Ken also went over to the engineering depot during the morning and had a very successful time meeting with some of the staff there. The possibility of hosting learning sessions at Ramsgate was discussed, and all of the staff we met seemed very keen to find out when they could get involved.

Overall the visit to Ramsgate was a huge success, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone again soon.

A big thank you to Dave Bull too for organising a great event.

Changes to the project

You will have no doubt heard a lot about various changes to the way our learning project works, so just to enlighten a bit further, RMT, TSSA, and ASLEF have all now successfully bid for funding for their own learning projects. How this will affect us remains to be seen, but I want to reassure everyone that we will carry on working together to achieve work place learning opportunities for our colleagues. We only succeed when we work together!
We will be having another reps forum at the Red Star centre soon and will brief all the ULR's who attend on the day. The good news is that there are now three funding streams we can access instead of one! So lets get creative!
See ya!

April Fools Day 2008

10 stories that could be April Fools... but aren't

It's here again, the day when jokers set out to make fools of the rest of us. But not every bizarre story is a hoax. Here is a round-up of some of the day's seemingly spoof news stories which are actually true (and one that isn't).

1. A new pay-per-view funeral service scheme is being launched today. The Daily Mail says the scheme at Southampton Crematorium allows mourners to grieve from home by watching proceedings online.

Penguins

Here's one that is - 'flying' penguins from the BBC. More details below

2. A turtle is addicted to nicotine. He became addicted after picking up the smouldering butts in his owner's garden, in Kouqian, China, and sulks if he doesn't get his fix. The Daily Express, which picked up the story from Chinese news agency Xinhua, includes a gob-smacking picture of the turtle doing a rather good impression of Dot Cotton.

3. The menopause is caused by the age-old battle between wives and mothers-in-law, reports the Times. As long as 50,000 to 300,000 years ago, competition for food in a family unit was a battle won by the younger women who fed their offspring, which led to the older women losing their ability to breed. With food hard to find, mothers-in-law tended to help rear the grandchildren rather than have more children themselves.

4. An injection that allows women bigger and better orgasms by increasing the size of the mysterious G-spot is being launched in the UK, says the Sun. The £800 collagen jab takes less than half-an-hour and is given under local anaesthetic.

5. School desks and chairs are to be enlarged to meet the needs of the UK's ever-heavier schoolchildren, reports the Express. On average British children are a centimetre taller than they were 10 years ago, and there are more obese youngsters, so desks supplied to UK schools will reflect this.

Baby crocodile

Stolen from a busy aquarium

6. Wind turbines or solar panels built by UK companies anywhere in the world could count towards Britain's renewable energy targets under controversial government proposals, according to the Financial Times.

7. You will soon be able to have a tattoo on your teeth, reports the Sun. Steve Heward, the dentist who started the craze in the US plans to set up in Britain.

8. The traditional Chinese martial art T'ai Chi can help control diabetes, reports the Daily Mail. Apparently, researchers have found the flowing movements and deep breathing involved can result in a fall in blood sugar levels.

9. A thief walked out of a busy Norwegian aquarium with a crocodile that was over two feet long, says the Independent.

10. Drinkers have been banned from calling barmaids "love". An outraged Daily Star says new discrimination laws mean landlords that allow punters to chat up staff could be hauled before a tribunal and face unlimited fines.

And finally, a genuine spoof. Have you heard the one about the penguins that can fly? A BBC camera crew filming a colony of Adelie penguins were astonished when they did something "no other penguins can do" and took to the Antarctic skies. Go to BBC iPlayer to see the "footage".

A life for sale?

I've just read this at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7301680.stm

An Australian has decided to sell up on the internet auction site Ebay not just his belongings but his entire life.

Ian Usher says he wants to auction off not just everything he owns but his job too, in one life package.

The 44-year-old says he wants to raise funds for a life-changing adventure after his marriage broke down.

Mr Usher, who emigrated to western Australia from Britain six years ago, hopes that he will be able to raise more than $400,000 (£185,000).

He wants to leave Australia with just the money in one hand and his passport in the other, on the first plane out.

What do you think? Could YOU do it? Take a look at his website www.alifeforsale.com and post your views on our blog.

Mike's manic moments

It's only Thursday, but what a week it's been! I am typing this from the Red Star in the relative comfort of the little office while I keep an eye on Ivor and Karl who are also beavering away (I don't know what at - that's the beauty of windows!)and looking busy.
On Monday I went to P&O Ferries in Dover to try and get them interested in our learning program and dangle the idea of a learning agreement. The old "Win - Win" pitch, but it is something we want to do, as seafarers are "hard to reach" workers and generally don't get offered much in the way of 'nice to have' training.I went with Malcolm from the Dover office of RMT who works with shipping and he thought it went well. I now have to try to move it on, so watch this space.
Tuesday was a good day as I was meeting up with Richard at Ashford who is a learning rep for ASLEF. It was quite an odd start to the day as when I boarded the train the train for Ashford there were a number of rail workers who were happy to complete lna's so I got them to crack on, but the conductor said "Ooh I can't do that my dad will kill me" "Why" says I "Cos he is doing something like that today" The penny dropped as I realised the resemblance - he is the spit of his dad, who of course is the rep I was going to meet up with! Anyway, Richard and I had a great day talking to loads of people at Ashford and conducted over sixty lna's - brilliant! Mind you, I better buy him another lunch soon as all he got was crap fish n chips!
Wednesday, and all the trains were up the swanney, but I eventually got to the Red Star in time for Ivor to bundle me out of the reps class to stop annoying them, but not before I was able to give Lara from S.London branch her briefing and badges before she zoomed off to be our hot shot at a national awards ceremony in Manchester.(pix to follow soon!)Then spent loadsa loot on essentials for the centre; lovely! And now here I am, back at the centre working wid da boys trying to get more of you lot to take your release entitlement!

and on we go

By the end of today there should be posters and the learning questionairre on the forum. Please use the LNA form as soon as. We need new posters for courses so get in touch if you have ideas scams or anything else of use. We have completed a strategy document for discussion at the lifelong learning steering group,we also need to think about the forthcoming road shows and Adult Learners week.

slade green learning

I was so chuffed last week to be invited to visit Slade Green engineering depot with Andrew from Rail Union Learning. It seems like a different lifetime ago that I first met Tom Collins at a Connex company council meeting. Tom was quick to see the benefits of workplace learning and wrote me a letter inviting me to the depot and asking to be trained as a union learning rep. Eventually I was able to get down there with a tutor from Lewisham College and half a dozen lap tops and we met a lot of the lads including John Collns who also became a ULR.Since then, they pushed and pleaded, begged and blackmailed (In the time honoured tradition of RMT reps!) to get a learning room, computers, internet and courses to be where they are now. They have also recently managed to aquire four new lap tops from Rail Union Learning. So, what more can I say?Just look at the pix !

the return of Carlos

Well good morning, having just returned from Espana ...it become a bit of a shock. The first thing that hit me was the weather OUCH, from 27 degrees to 7 that was not a good experience.
And before I go any further a big thank you to Juan the Spanish tutor all his help with the Spanish it was worth( in more ways than one) it so I hope you all attend the next course at the Red Star Learning Centre.

The weather in Spain where I frequent is really warm this time of the year where you can walk and see the oranges and lemons on the trees, the sea is calm and you still see people sun bathing on the beach; I was very lucky to be in Spain to see the Three Kings Festival and New Years Eve wonderful traditions that are being kept alive by the Spanish people.

Anyway back to 2008 and the Red Star Learning Centre we hope to see a lot more of you all this year and to keep you eye on the blog for the latest developments and courses at the Centre.
Just remember this is your centre, use it for your future development, it could be languages or skills that you feel you may need to develop you railway career. So pop in and see us but please dont ask about the squirrel.

New challenges

OK folks! Were back, and kicking off the new year with an e mail from Uncle Bob to say well done for our efforts during the last year. And that's not just for RMT reps but all of you involved with the Red Star Learning Centre so far. However, remember that our project is not just about the Chatham area, but the whole of Southeastern and we need all of you out there performing as agreed (No, not X factor!) the action plan decided at the recent forum. For those of you that need a reminder, or could not make it,
1) Speak with you manager formally about your role and get their support.
2) Do mapping your workplace exercise
3) Perform learning needs analysis (Form will be sent out soon)
Before I go I would just like to say what a blast it was at the last forum! Let's hope next year is as much of a "bonding exercise". I will post again soon and look forward to getting round to all of your work places, so start thinking about road shows as well! So not much to do then!
Tarrah!
Mike
