Catching up!

It has been a long time since I last posted on here. My job now takes me away from rail workers as I now work in the maritime section of RMT Learning (I am the maritime section!).However, I travel around the country a great deal attending various events and meetings and in doing so I have met lots and lots of new ULRs.
I started in all this with Southeastern many years ago and since then have seen the learning agenda go from a small project that was initially viewed with suspicion or totally ignored to the undoubted success that it is today. It is fabulous to see that Rulers is still going strong and that there are many new faces involved with the Red Star Learning centre in Chatham. (it makes me quite lachrymose - there's one for word of the week!)
Only last week I had a chance encounter with a learner who told me her career had took off since sahe addressed her literacy and numeracy and she would never have done it without meeting us during an Adult learners week some years ago!
It is great to see that life long learning is no longer a project, but sustainable within the employer and union agendas. I can only say well done to all the ULRs everywhere! Keep it up!

On 22nd October, Elizabeth Oyedemi (TSSA Learning Rep, London Bridge), Madeleine Richards (TSSA Dyslexia Project Worker), and Kendal May (TSSA Lead Learning Rep, Southeastern) spent a day meeting the staff at London Bridge to discuss Learning issues and raise awareness of Dyslexia in the workplace.

Thank you to everyone who we met and, as a direct result of speaking with the staff, we are looking to offer a 'Workplace Signing Day' at London Bridge or Cannon Street early in the New Year.

We were also able to direct staff who wished to learn computer skills to the Southern courses at East Croydon, which is also open to staff from Southeastern who cannot attend the sessions at Red Star Learning Centre, Chatham.

We'll be in touch soon when a date for the Signing Day has been reserved!

5th Unionlearn SERTUC Annual Conference, London

On 2nd November, Unionlearn held its 5th Annual Conference at Congress House, London, and this was well attended by Union Learning Reps from a whole range of companies and professions. Southeastern was represented by Kendal May, Susan Pattwell, Ivor Riddell, Mike Sargent, Karl Rogers, George Woods, and John Collins. The facilities were superb, as was lunch, and a big thank you to Graham Ferris from Lewisham College for the workshop session.

It was a great opportunity to network with other reps, discover what new opportunities and changes are taking place, and plan together for an even more successful 2011 for workplace learning!

Card-making sessions for Christmas...

We will be running a card-making day at Ashford Training Rooms on Thursday 4th November. Contact Kendal May to reserve a place, or to request further details. This was very popular last year at Chatham, and is a great way to make your Christmas Cards with 'the personal touch' this year! There will be a charge of £3 to cover the tutor costs and cards, but this is well worth it.

Women's Day

Susan Pattwell recently organised a Women's Day at the Red Star Learning Centre in Chatham.

Due to a fatality on the line at Newington that morning, and therefore no trains running, many members of staff were unable to reach the centre.

Hi friends - having promised the Southeastern ULR's I would get back on here within the week, here I am! It has been so long since I blogged that I forgot the codes - which is a bit rich as I set them up! Anyway, lovely to see that "Rulers" is still running. There has been a lot of activity in our region, not just us but the other unions we work with as well. I think that all our reps can be justifiably proud of the reputation our projects are getting within the world of adult learning and long may it continue. To all our RMT learning reps I just want to say I hope to seeyou at our conference at the Friends meeting house in Euston Road London on monday next. It will be grrrreat! Southern Learning Centre opens at London Victoria

Taffy Evans invited us to the opening of Southerns new Learning Centre at London Victoria station today, and it was a great opportunity to meet with some of Southerns Union Learning Reps.

Taffy accompanied us at the Lifelong Learning Steering Committee meeting in the afternoon, and joined in the discussions about offering new opportunities to our London-based staff.

We look forward to hopefully working with other TOC's in the future to ensure our Metro-area staff have easier access to their Union Learning Reps and local courses.

The Red Star Learning Centre based at Chatham station is running its popular computer skills courses again.

Starting Monday 2 February 2009 the 10 week course (2 hours a week) will teach you the basics of word processing, how to make posters, digital photo editing, PowerPoint, and web design.

Morning sessions 10.00 - 12.00 Afternoon sessions 13.30 - 15.30

At the end of each course you'll have an accredited qualification in Information Technology (IT) skills, confidence to use your computer at home, and the ability to take your learning to the next level should you wish.

Southeastern Skills Pledge

Research shows that across the UK workforce around one employee in every five has problems with basic literacy and numeracy. That's bad news for employees as it means they lack the skills to secure promotion or benefit from training. It's bad news for employers because it means their staff are not able to do their best for the business. And above all is bad news for passengers as the lack of basic skills means employees may not be delivering the service they expect.

That's why, in partnership with the RMT, ASLEF and the TSSA, Southeastern has taken a major step towards improving literacy and numeracy and raising skill and qualification levels among our 3,900 strong workforce.

The Skills Pledge is an opportunity for businesses or organisations to show publicly the importance they place on investing in the skills of their people. It is a commitment to support all our employees to develop their basic skills, including literacy and numeracy, and work towards relevant, valuable qualifications to at least Level 2 (equivalent to five good GCSEs). The purpose is to ensure that all employees are skilled, competent and able to make a full contribution to the success of our company.

Last Friday 5 December 2008, Andy Bindon, HR director officially launched Southeastern's commitment to the Skills Pledge at The Red Star Learning Centre in Chatham on Friday morning. He paid tribute to the commitment and hard work the trades unions have put into both employee development and the Skills Pledge.

Find out why learning new skills can help safeguard your career

More than half of workers were worried about their job prospects because of the economic downturn, according to new research today.

A survey of 2,000 adults by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) showed that one in two would now try to improve their career prospects through training.

Most of those polled admitted there was room for improvement in their skill levels, including IT, literacy and problem solving.

LSC chairman Chris Banks said: "It's true that learning new skills and retraining can lead to a refreshing career change, but it's also important to realise that employees with transferable skills are often seen as the biggest assets to employers.

"A small investment in learning new skills will make you better prepared to tackle any eventuality, particularly in a tough economy."

TSSA RULR London Meeting

Karl, our lead TSSA rep, attended a meeting of London RULR reps today, and was very disappointed at the low attendance of local reps.

I must apologise myself too, as I was due to go until a family member was admitted into hospital, but it's important that we all try to attend these meetings or conferences whenever possible. It's a great chance to network, share ideas, and find out what's going on!

It's encouraging to see some more posts being made on the blog recently, and don't forget our Rail-Learning website too!

Well today at the Centre we have stage 2 union reps course, and of course yours truly in attendance its a shame none of you nice people reading this don't just pop it for a chat. Anyway I am off to TSSA headquarters to discuss learning reps and the LACK of work that they do. I will be proposing a few idea's around and will be asking for additional funds to run a couple of course's that I think will be of intrest to everyone so keep looking at the blog for the latest news.

We also held a small raffle for an MP3 player and as you can see Ivor was the lucky winner (He can now listen to some soothing music while doing his office work at the centre). Also many thanks to one and all who attended and to Mike ( I assume it was Mike as I have not seen him for such a long time).

So back to matters in hand where are you all, we need help for learners week, I can promise you free travel and a wonderful experience plus knowing you will be promoting the Red Star Learning Centre.

Thank you to all the Learner Reps that turned up on Friday and informed the Lead Learner Reps what had been going on in their area.

Please could those who couldn't attend let the Lead Learner reps know what has been going on, and who you have spoken to. These are outcomes, and are very important so that we can set up and run courses to keep the Red Star Centre open.

If you cannot attend meetings please let the Lead Reps know, we can then send you any information from these meetings. Your contributions are welcome, so please keep them coming in.

The day's meeting was a wake up call to all Learning Reps to make their presence felt in the work-place and proposals for the 2009 Learners Week.It was also highlighted that one of the functions of being a Learning Rep is to encourage the personal Development of fellow workers and their family for it is an acepted fact that- FORMAL EDUCATION WILL MAKE YOU A LIVING,SELF EDUCATION WILL MAKE YOU A FORTUNE

Mike's rant

I was at the learning reps forum today with some of the more proactive reps. All good people who want to get involved and help their fellow members and workers access any aspects of learning that may appeal to them. So, what is the problem? Well, there is no problem with them, but I do have a problem with those who have undertaken the role of learning rep and then do nothing! And I mean nothing at all
Being a rep is not just about you, it's about the reps and learners who will follow you. Establishing acceptance of the role in the workplace is very important, so adding to negative perceptions by doing sweet F.A. is not helpful! So, if you do nothing else, find a colleague who would do a more pro-active job and get them to do it!
If you have an issue with this, please feel free to complain to your branch (RMT) or your lead learning reps or at your union head office. At least we would know that you read this!
